Leaders In Freedom Conference
A HUGH Success!

In the photo above, a group of students attending the December 9-11, Civitan Leaders in Freedom Conference gathered for meal time. It was just one of many opportunities to make new friends, share experiences and review Conference activities, all directed toward the Civitan motto, "Builders of Good Citizenship."
During the three day conference, students heard lectures rich in history, civics, political science, economics, and, of course, leadership. Students learn that not all leaders are behind microphones; many more are behind microscopes studying the issues that face many of us on a daily basis. The message of courage and personal sacrifice is shared by conference speakers who actually experienced them.
If your club did not sponsor a student to the Conference this year, perhaps you will consider doing so next year. Following the conference, many clubs invite the students they sponsored, along with their parents, to a meeting where the students provide their impressions and experiences of the program. After participting in one of these follow-up meetings, and speaking with the students you sponsored, you will be very proud that your club, and your district, offers this outstanding program of "Building Good Citizenship" to students in your neighborhood. More photos of the conference are here.

Governor's Corner

I Am Civitan!
and in the words of Past International President, Syd Fishman,”It’s Grand to be a Civitan!” When I was installed as your Governor at the last District Meeting, I briefly outlined some of my goals for 2011-2012 I’ll address a few of them here.
Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) - One of the easiest things to brag about in Civitan is our flagship project, the UAB Civitan International Research Center. No other service club can boast a world-class research center doing such groundbreaking research and treatment. We are changing the world. Let people know. Promote and support CIRC through Civitan at the Helm.
Local Projects - Make sure your local projects and fundraisers get publicity. Join other events like the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk and show your Civitan pride by co-sponsoring the event. Wear your Civitan attire and be ready when someone asks: “what is Civitan?”
Build Membership - We need more Civitans! Hold SEEK Meetings, recruit at projects and fundraisers, and remember “You have to ask!” Make your club an attractive option to someone seeking “Service, Knowledge, and Fellowship.”
Enjoy Civitan - Most of my good friends are Civitans. Civitans are good people. The opportunity to gather with fellow Civitans at Club, Area, District, and International events builds friendships that last a lifetime. It should not be all work and no play. Clubs should have purely social events such as picnics, trips to sporting events or theaters. These events increase both fellowship and membership as people enjoy themselves while “Enriching Lives Through Service.”

I’m not saying Jo Ann O’Toole has big feet, but she is leaving me some Big Shoes to Fill. Her performance as Governor sets the bar for all who follow. I am glad she will continue providing me assistance as Immediate Past Governor and close friend. I also appreciate the support I have received from the clubs as Governor-Elect. Your continued support is essential for this coming year as we work together to “Enrich Lives Through Service.”

   In Civitan,
   Steve
